SIPI Matlab

Some frequenly-asked-quesions about the SIPI Matlab distribution:

How can I get Matlab on my computer?

In January 2010 USC purchased a site license for Matlab products. These are available at no charge to USC faculty, staff and students. The software can be downloaded from

    http://software.usc.edu

A valid USC username and password is required to access this web site.

What version of Matlab is available?

At the present time Matlab Release R2011a is available on the software.usc.edu web sitse. DVDs for installation are also available in EEB 410.

What types of systems can I run Matlab on?

The current version of Matlab can be installed on PCs running either Windows (32-bit or 64-bit) or Linux (32-bit or 64-bit), or on Mac OS X (Intel architecture only).

What toolboxes are included in the USC site license?

Bioinformatics Toolbox
Control System Toolbox
Curve Fitting Toolbox
Data Acquisition Toolbox
Image Processing Toolbox
Instrument Control Toolbox
Optimization Toolbox
Signal Processing Blockset
Signal Processing Toolbox
SimMechanics
Simscape
Simulink
Stateflow
Statistics Toolbox
Symbolic Math Toolbox

What if I need some other toolbox?

Toolboxes cost a significant amount of money to purchase, and they require an annual maintenance fee. SIPI has purchased the following additional toolboxes that can be installed if needed. These are available with the number of keys shown below.

Communication Toolbox5
Matlab Compiler15
Parallel Computing Toolbox5
Simulink Control Design   5
System Identification Toolbox5
Wavelet Toolbox6

IMPORTANT: These additional toolboxes use a different licensing method than the USC site license. They can only be used if your computer is attached to SIPI network on the USC campus. While the main part of Matlab that is licensed through USC's site license will work anywhere, the above extra toolboxes will not work at home, from a laptop off campus, etc.

If a large number of people feel the need to have other toolbox, it might be possible to add it to the distribution. The same applies to increasing the number of keys for an existing toolbox. Additional keys copy money and add to the annual maintenance fee so we prefer to not purchase additional keys unless there is a significant need for them.

What do I need to install Matlab on my PC or Mac?

For the Matlab from USC's site license all you need is the media that can be downloaded from software.usc.edu and a activation key that is on their web site.

To install the additional toolboxes you will need the media for those toolboxes (available in EEB 410), a copy of the current license file that is installed on SIPI's license manager and a File Installation Key for the version you are installing.

The license can be downloaded by clicking here.

The File Installation Key for the SIPI additional Matlab toolboxes is

     12717-25918-31084-07736 (for R2010b)

     42946-36297-59813-30352-37287 (for R2011a)

Where do I find instructions for installing Matlab?

Installation guides are available on the media containing the Matlab software in the file "install_guide.pdf". In addition, see the following web pages for Mac and Windows installtions:

For Macs: http://www.usc.edu/its/matlab/mac.html
For Windows: http://www.usc.edu/its/matlab/windows.html

What toolboxes are available on the Matlab in the SAL, KOH, etc. user rooms?

The Matlab on the systems in the user rooms currently has the following toolboxes available. The toolboxes that are available in the user rooms but not in the distribution that can be downloaded and installed on your own computer are indicated.
