Richard Leahy receives 2010 Edward J. Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award

Sep 2010 -
Professor Richard Leahy is the 2010 recipient of the Edward J. Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award from the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/nps/nmisc/MISAward.html). The Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society one of 38 Societies within the IEEE and is devoted to the advancement of electrical and electronic engineering in nuclear and plasma sciences. The Edward J. Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award is given annually to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of medical imaging science. Important award considerations include the impact and innovative aspects of a nominee's research and their influence on medical imaging science through education.
Richard is internationally known for his signal and image processing research and joined the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering in 1985. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle in England. He has served as associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, and as director for the Signal and Image Processing Institute. He has also been involved with the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging at UCLA's School of Medicine, first as a visiting professor and then as an associate member. Since 2001 he has been an associate member of the Laboratory of Neuroimaging for UCLA, and also the co-chair for the International Conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging in Davis.

Professor Bart Kosko of SIPI has been elected a member of the College of Fellows of the International Neural Network Society (INNS)

Aug 2010-

Professor Bart Kosko of SIPI has been elected a member of the College of Fellows of the International Neural Network Society (INNS) (http://www.inns.org/).  INNS is the leading professional organization for individuals interested in the theoretical and computational understanding of the brain and applying that knowledge to develop new and more effective forms of machine intelligence.  INNS was formed in 1987 by the leading scientists in the neural network field, and has a worldwide membership of more than 2,000. The field of neural networks is highly interdisciplinary, and the membership of INNS represent a variety of fields and backgrounds.

Bart received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, CA in 1987, and has been a faculty member at USC since 1988.  He also has a joint appointment in the USC Gould School of Law. His research interests include: adaptive systems, fuzzy theory, neural networks, bio-computing, nonlinear signal processing, intelligent agents, smart materials, and stochastic resonance. The INNS College of Fellows is a highly selective group of individuals with outstanding research stature and accomplishments.

Shri Narayanan has been selected as a Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE Signal Processing Society

November 23, 2009-

Ming Hsieh Electrical Engineering Department faculty members Shri Narayanan and Antonio Ortega have been selected as Distinguished Lecturers for 2010-2011 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Signal Processing Society (SPS). SPS Distinguished Lecturers present invited talks in their specialties at local chapter meetings of IEEE. In many cases, the local chapter meetings are held at universities nationally and internationally. This distinction recognizes their unique research contributions and communication skills in presenting their work to audiences with a broad range of backgrounds. Both faculty are members of the Signal and Image Processing Institute (SIPI) within the Department. Shri Narayanan's research focuses on signals and systems modeling with an interdisciplinary emphasis on speech, audio, language, multimodal and biomedical signal processing and applications. Antonio Ortega's work is concerned with digital image and video compression and communications.
