What I Do
Allan Weber is currently in charge of the network for the Signal and Image
Processing Institute (SIPI) and portions of the Department of Electrical
Engineering and many of the computer systems connected to it. This means he
gets to stand in front of the fan when stuff is hitting it.
Why I Do It
I wish I knew.
Guiding Philosophy of My Professional Life
"Of course I don't mind you barging into my office and making
me drop everything I'm working on so I can
help you with your silly little problem."
Note: The above does not apply to students in my classes since they
have paid money for the right to barge into my office.
Important Things I've Recently Learned (That Most People Already Knew)
- ATM cards from U.S. banks work in Europe. Well, at least some of the time.
- At In-N-Out, you can ask them to make the French Fries well done. They
come out much better.
- Improved chipping, pitching, and putting will make your golf score drop
faster than crushing it off the tee.
Top Three Favorite Restaurants
- The Derby
(233 E. Huntington Dr., Arcadia, CA) Don't even look at the menu. Just
get the bacon-wrapped filet. It's a bit pricey, but worth it.
- El Cholos
(1121 S. Western Ave., L.A., CA) Get the the traditional
style nachos, a margarita, and the fajitas.
- In-N-Out
(all over So. Calif.) Best burgers and fries around. I live less then 1/2 mile
from one of them. Life is good. Quick tip: ask for the fries to be made well
done - they are much better that way.
Stupid User Tricks
Here are a few of my favorite "dumb computer user" stories that I've
personally observed.
- User removes my nightly backup tape from the tape drive one afternoon,
puts his own data tape in the drive (not write-protected), forgets to
read from it until the next morning, and then wonders where his irreplacable
data went.
- User gets an account opened on new workstation B that shares the same home
directories on the file server with workstation A that he has been using.
Decides that all these files he's seeing on system B must be a copy of the
files he sees on the system A and deletes everything to conserve diskspace.
User then goes back to workstation A and wonders where his files went.
Other Stuff
- A library of information for the EE 459Lx (Embedded Systems Design Lab) class.
